Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male Pattern Hair Loss

Male Pattern Hair Loss condition is also called androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness. Hair Loss in men is known to be related to hormones. There is a predisposition to the condition genetically. Example, if your father or grandfather suffered from Male Pattern Hair Loss, then it is likely that you will as well.

Hair Loss Signs and Symptoms in Males

Hair loss starts with a noticeable thinning of the hair. One may begin to notice thinning around their temples. Thinning is also observed towards the back of the head (crown). You also may notice more shedding than usual, such as in the shower or on your pillow in the morning.

MAIN CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS IN MALES

Hormonal Changes

Male Pattern Hair Loss is mainly due to hormonal changes. In particular, a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can become imbalanced in a person. Increased quantity of DHT in the scalp can lead to a shortened anagen phase, which will lead to reduced production of hairs. The hairs that will continue to grow will be much finer.

Heredity

The probability of developing Male Pattern Hair Loss are significantly increased if someone else in the family has experienced the same condition.

Illness

There are a number of underlying medical conditions that can trigger hair loss. If you are experiencing sudden, patchy or massive hair loss, or your hair is coming out in clumps, you should seek the advice of a physician. Problems may arise due to glandular issues, auto-immune issues (Alopecia Areata), infections, fevers and skin disorders. Physical or mental shock can also cause hair loss.

Medications

Patients being treated with Chemotherapy often experience hair loss, and people who regularly take medications for high blood pressure, arthritis, heart issues, cancer or depression may also be impacted.

THE NORWOOD SCALE

The Norwood scale is used as a measurement and for description purposes to describe the degree in hair loss in men. The hair loss patterns shown on the Norwood scale, are the most common types of hair loss patterns in men.
